Since You Asked

Welcome to the advice column of the New Way Newspaper! This issue we will answer questions submitted by some of our New Way students.

Question: How do I still have fun with friends but also care about school and do well in it?

Answer: With the demands of school and the work that comes along with it, it may be hard to see yourself having fun with friends and doing well in school, but it is possible. The most important thing to do is to prioritize. For most of us school should be first on the list. I recommend getting your school work done first, before hanging out with friends. If you have a lot of schoolwork to do, pace yourself and take short breaks. Studies show that spending time with friends is good for your mental health so when you do have free time, spend it with friends. Friends can bring joy to your life, but before you spend time with them, make sure you are completing your school work.

Question: There is a boy I have a crush on, but I’m not sure how to act around him or tell him that I like him. What should I do?

Answer: There are several important things to remember while revealing your feelings to someone. The most important thing is to be yourself. Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not, just to fit in around them. This includes staying true to your morals and beliefs. When you first start talking to him, try to find common interests. Participate in activities that promote conversation and help you get to know each other. When you feel you know them well enough and are ready to reveal your feelings, do it slowly. Don’t overwhelm them but also tell them how you feel. I hope that this advice will help you start a lasting relationship with the man of your dreams.
