Did you know there is an elevator that was installed in 1926? It is located in Jerome, Arizona which is 2 hours north of Phoenix. Jerome used to be an old mining town and is located on a mountain. It is Arizona’s first elevator and it has a hand-operated door! It travels to the speed of 50 feet per minute. It was probably fast back then, but not compared to modern elevators, which can travel as fast as 4,000 feet per minute. This elevator still works and you can find it at the Jerome Grand Hotel. The hotel used to be a hospital which was called the United Verde Hospital. The hotel is known for being haunted.
One of our own students made a video of this – his name is Evan Rawe. You can find it on his YouTube channel called Phoenician Elevators.
